Changes to the Victorian Environment Protection Act
Law firm Allens Arthur Robinson summarises changes proposed in the Environment Protection (Amendment) Bill recently introduced to Victorian Parliament.
Among the proposed changes are:
- a plastic bag phase-out;
- reform of the industrial waste landfill levy;
- changes to streamline the administration of licences, clean-up notices and prosecutions under the Environment Protection Act 1970;
- new obligations on Victoria's 250 biggest energy- and water-using companies via the introduction of environment and resource efficiency plans.

I suppose the plastic bag phase out will be excellent for the plastic bag industry, because now people will have to buy boxes of them retail to use for bins, cat poo etc.
Mind you, making people pay for them may at least limit wanton and excessive use.

Thanks for your comments armagnac esq. I don't think the phase out is good for the plastic bag industry - yes, their retail sales will increase but I'd guess the big money comes from wholesale sales to supermarkets etc, which will presumably decrease markedly. It's good for those parts of the industry that can manufacture degradable shopping bags though.
